Modern Marvel
Modern Marvel brings life and light to a tired yet locally-listed heritage house, augmenting the bold and optimistic mid-century design for 21st century family living. Purchased by a creative family, Deb and Shaun and their two children, the integrity of the building's original vision had been eroded over time. Led by Lachlan as project architect for SCA, the brief was to rediscover the glory of this Art Moderne house.
Architecture: SCA
Construction: SQ
Interventions focus on the kitchen and dining room, a master bedroom extension over the garage and landscape improvements to better integrate the outdoor pool. The approach is selective with the interventions, acknowledging the functionality of the original plan of the house. The key design moves build on the Art Moderne language, inserting a curved concrete bench in the kitchen, and using ceiling planes, screens and bespoke joinery to delineate spaces and uses within an open plan environment.
Thanks to the sympathetic additions to the house, the local area has retained one of its crowning jewels, where so many others have been lost. Adding their own chapter to Sydney Modernism, the family has gained day-to-day liveability and improved connection thanks to the kitchen and open plan dining, which now serves as a central social hub.
