Modern Rose
Modern Rose is committed to maintaining its family's Northern Beaches lifestyle and maximising the space, value and distinctiveness of the existing property. Understanding the modernist value of the existing Pettit and Sevitt house, Megan and Janet gave us a brief to find a way to deliver multi-generational living delivered with elegance and style.
Architecture: SAGO Design
Construction: SAGO Build
The approach is a new take on the granny flat, rethinking this typology to deliver a second residence with equal merit to the primary home. The design strategy juggles the desire for privacy and independence with strategies to maintain connections to family life.
SAGO’s solution utilises the steeply sloping site to create visual connection between the new house and the kids' garden below, while also delivering views of the coastline. Taking a leaf out of the book for the design of the Rose Seidler House, which Harry Seidler designed for his own mother, the house is lifted off the ground on stilts, creating undercover parking below the house and making a feature out of the gently-graded staircase entry wrapped around the exterior.
Built by SAGO, the result is comfortable, functional apartment-style living in a compact home, which channels the familiar features of mid-century modernism thanks to a material palette of beautiful hardwood timber, painted masonry and splashes of primary colour.
